New Flexyfoot Enters Mobility Market with Revolutionary Walking Aid

Shock-absorbing, anti-slip Flexyfoot is designed to replace the old fashioned ferrule (or rubber tip) on these aids and revolutionise walking for the injured or infirm. Flexyfoot gives 50% more grip on floors and ground surfaces than ferrules, and eases the significant aches and pains associated with constant stress and impact on joints. With its patented air-sprung technology, Flexyfoot bends and can rotate by 360 degrees, meaning users can easily turn on their walking aids.

Flexyfoot suits people of all ages and levels of fitness, from sportsmen to children to the elderly, either on a temporary or permanent basis. It has been developed over three years, trialled with leading orthopaedic and physiotherapy experts - and tested exhaustively to surpass standards.

Flexyfoot is being aimed at physiotherapists, occupational therapists and surgeons. It offers benefits for both health professional and patient. In addition to increased mobility, comfort and security, fewer follow-up appointments are likely due to fewer slips and falls. Users are also reporting reduced musculoskeletal problems.

Robert Simonis FRCS, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, St Peter’s Hospital, Surrey, who trialled Flexyfoot added: “I have no hesitation in recommending FlexyFoot. It is safer, quicker and easier to use than a standard crutch ferrule. The tread is always flat on the ground, maximising grip and preventing slippage. Shock absorbency and free rotation reduces strain on the arms and upper body. Patients of all ages, shapes and sizes find them more comfortable and having used them will not go back to using an old fashioned crutch.”

DePuy Mitek Launches All-Inside Meniscal Repair System

DePuy Mitek, Inc., recently announced the launch of its OMNISPAN™ Meniscal Repair System for all-inside repairs of meniscus tears at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 2010 Annual Meeting.

The System features a low-profile needle pre-loaded with two PEEK backstops and proprietary ORTHOCORD® suture for enhanced strength.

Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries, especially in athletes, leading to an estimated 850,000 surgeries every year in the U.S.1 The arthroscopic all-inside technique is less invasive than inside-out or outside-in approaches, allowing surgeons to make fewer incisions during repair and reduce the risk of trauma to surrounding tissue.

“The OMNISPAN System offers strength and precision through a minimally invasive approach,” said Andrew Chen, MD,* of The Alpine Clinic in Franconia, NH. “Its active backstop deployment, low-profile repair and innovative suture allow surgeons to perform a precise meniscal repair.”

The ORTHOCORD Suture, made from Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene and PDS™ (Polydioxanone) minimizes tissue abrasion and the PDS component is resorbable, resulting in less suture mass on the meniscus surface over time. In addition, the suture knot is made in the backside of the meniscus to avoid contact with the femoral condyles.

The OMNISPAN System includes a disposable applier and needles available in three angle options for repair in horizontal, vertical or oblique configurations. With the active deployment provided by the applier, surgeons can release backstops with accuracy. Rather than plunging to the back of the meniscus to deploy, this System barely penetrates the back of the meniscus, minimizing needle exposure.

geneX®ds - Extending the Reach of Injectable Bone Grafts
Product News - August 2010
geneX®ds - Extending the Reach of Injectable Bone Grafts

Biocomposites, the pioneers in synthetic bone graft materials have launched geneX ds, a dual syringe mixing and minimally invasive delivery system containing geneX, the unique resorbable bone graft material with a negative surface charge.

The powder and liquid components of geneX are provided pre-packed in separate syringes. The syringes connect together and allow a faster, simpler and cleaner way for mixing geneX. The resulting setting paste can then be delivered through an 8cm dispenser (included). geneX ds is ideal for difficult-to-reach surgical sites or minimally invasive procedures.

geneX is a synthetic bone graft material with a unique bi-phasic composition manufactured through a proprietary process ZPC® (Zeta Potential Control) that confers the product with a reproducible negative surface charge. This property stimulates bone cell activity, accelerating bone formation and fusion by harnessing key proteins and directing osteoblast adhesion and proliferation for rapid osteogenesis. geneX is fully resorbable and is completely replaced by bone. geneX overcomes the surgeon’s reliance on donor tissue presenting both a cost saving and a reduction in the risks associated with its use.

geneX ds is FDA cleared and CE marked. Available now in 2.5cc.
